By Dan, NE Hair Employee

It was late 2013, and I noticed my hair beginning to thin. My once full, wavy head of hair was looking more and more like a bad wig, and I didn’t know what was happening. I had read a lot about genetic hair loss, but this was different. I wasn’t receding or balding — my hair was simply thinning out, looking worse than it ever had.
In April of 2014, however, my hair is looking better than it has in years. So what caused the dramatic change? I believe the answer is in my diet.

By switching from Stop and Shop to Trader Joe’s, I have been able to intake more organic foods and healthy proteins. If you have read our article on foods for healthy hair, you know that hair’s makeup is 97% composed of protein. After a hair transplant surgery, maintaining a hair healthy diet will ensure that your lifelong hair is as rich and full as you want it to be.

Here are three new items to my diet that I always pick up when shopping.

Organic Coconut Oil

Although I occasionally put coconut oil in my breakfast shakes, the real benefit of this super food for your hair is through using it as a conditioner. Coconut oil goes far deeper into your hair than most conditioners, which usually only aid in coating the surface of the hair. Coconut oil improves hair’s structure and dexterity.

Organic Whey Protein

Roughly 97% of hair’s makeup is protein, so why not ensure you are getting enough protein with a direct intake? I began drinking Organic Whey Protein shakes (between two and four scoops, 16-32 grams of protein) at least five times a week in late December, and my hair has since been growing faster and fuller than ever.

Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon

Salmon may be the ultimate hair food. Packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, which constitute roughly 3% of hair’s makeup, and vitamin D, extremely important in regulating hair cycles, salmon is also protein rich. Additionally, salmon contains B vitamins, which can help keep hair strands long.
