To date, stem cells for hair loss has an extremely promising, albeit experimental, procedure. Though many patients with balding or thinning hair have experienced substantial hair growth through stem cell treatments, there has been little scientific, peer-reviewed studies to back the claim that stem cells can restore hair. But a new study by Sanford-Burnham researchers published in the scientific journal Plos One has given credence to the hard scientific data that stem cells for hair loss may be the future of hair restoration.
We have developed a method using human pluripotent stem cells to create new cells capable of initiating human hair growth. The method is a marked improvement over current methods that rely on transplanting existing hair follicles from one part of the head to another, said Alexey Terskikh, Ph.D., associate professor in the Development, Aging, and Regeneration Program. Our stem cell method provides an unlimited source of cells from the patient for transplantation and isnt limited by the availability of existing hair follicles.
At New England Center for Hair Restoration, we have been treating balding patients with adipose-derived stem cell injections under investigative protocols since 2011. Find out more about our stem cell treatments for hair loss on our Stem Cells page.
